James Berlyn
James Berlyn is an award-winning performing artist and teacher of twenty years experience.
Since graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance from the Victorian College of the Arts in 1987, he has achieved a national profile as a dancer and dance-theatre performer and performance maker, working with companies and independent artists around Australia and South East Asia.
As an independent artist, Berlyn has written, choreographed and performed nine one man shows performed at fringe festivals around Australia. His works have been directed by Paige Gibbs, Ross Coli, Jim Hughes, Adrian Barnes, Sally Richardson and Simon Clarke. He performed regularly in cabaret for SGL Mardi Gras's Club Bent in Sydney and Putting On An Act in Perth. He was awarded the Swan Gold Best Actor Award for Theatre in Perth in 1993. Currently, Berlyn has resumed independent practice including his PICA award-winning hybrid piece, Tawdry Heartburns Manic Cures (seen most recently at Perth International Arts Festival, Ten Days on the Island and WOMADelaide).
He is currently presenting Twyping as part of the 2011 AWESOME Festival and in he is co-curating Proximity with Sarah Rowbottam, Australia's first one-one-one micro-festival of art. He performs in Sue Healey's premiere of Variant and Matthew Lutton's new production of Elektra presented in the 2012 Perth Festival. He also continues to develop his solo performance Crash Course and new one-on-one live-art performance Sweet Life.
